Michael Phelps is a great swimmer and athlete. There is little dispute to that. God reached down years ago and gave him a talent we all dream about having.
And so as we've all watched the end-to-end coverage of Phelps swimming while his miced-mom and sisters sit in the bleachers, comes the answer to the question of where his dad has been. According to Chris Chase, he's in Maryland watching the games. He said he's kinda wanted it that way, too, to keep the focus on Michael.
Hark back to memories of Bill Cosby and the universal proclamation of "Hi Mom!" on TV.
But this is a domestic story of a broken home and the issues that come along with separation and divorce. And that's sad. It always is. This week alone I've heard from two good friends. One man's wife left him AND the kids this past weekend. Another guys' girlfriend left Sunday while he was at church and took their kid.
Maybe there has been a father-figure in Michael's life to support him. Sounds like him and his dad have had some rough spots. But I think at times, we all have rough spots with our kids/parents.
No, I'm not saying there are excuses for them, but it is clearly hard to be a parent. It's not easy being a kid either. And now we know that while Michael Phelps has amassed historic gold medals, is in line for lots of promotional contracts and millions of dollars, he's probably got an empty spot somewhere in his heart that neither of those two things can fill.
