I got the coolest studio flash kit in the mail yesterday.  Really professional material and spent a portion of the evening trying to figure out the settings I need to more subtle lighting.  Whew, I've got some new things to learn.  With my two new lights faced directly at my girls, I blew them out with the lights.  With the D-40, I need to figure out how to stop down the aperture and then figure out the appropriate shutter speed to be using.

One of my old camera pros today at work showed me how to make a few changes that will be helpful and referred me to shootsmarter.com.  Those guys are talking about lighting with bounced light and producing some pretty cool effects.

So any suggestions on lighting?  I'm wanting to do some sitting and standing portraits of all the kids for the GrowingUpMac.com project I'm building.  What types of lighting do you use?  How far back do you put the lights, etc?  I'm sure our neighbors are thinking we've got a bottle of lightning going off in our house.

Help.

Let me know how it works out! I’ve never used off-camera flash before.
