Hi everyone, we had a meeting Tuesday night at the Balch Springs Library to discuss plans that are continuing to develop with the Balch Springs Complete Count Committee for the 2010 Census.
Our committee exists in order to plan and put in place outreach campaigns that raise awareness of the census and ultimately, drive participation.
We agreed in our discussions that through a grassroots effort here in Balch Springs that we seek to promote the importance and benefits of responding to the census in April of 2010. We aren't going to go door-to-door asking people to fill out the survey. Our job is to raise awareness and engage and inspire others to take action.
Of particular importance to us in Balch Springs are areas where there is hidden or overcrowded housing. Where there are those in our city who speak little or no English. There were a few pockets in the 2000 census where there were low response rates. And like almost all areas of Texas, we have our share of new immigrant populations living in the city. It's important that these residents be counted because the total can affects the flow of federal dollars that can be used to provide important services to all. It also affects our representation in the Texas Legislature and the Congress.
To effectively work our city, we agreed to have seen focused committees. They include:
- An Education Committee
- A Faith-based Committee
- A Media/Marketing Committee
- A City Government Committee
- A Business Committee
- A Recruiting Committee
- And a Hispanic-Community-Based Committee.
If you're interested in serving on one of these committees and live within the city of Balch Springs, feel free to leave your name here in the comments section and we'll be in touch with you pretty quickly. We have much to do before April and all the help we can attract is quite welcomed.
