Music has been an influence in my life since the days of childhood.  Mom and Dad can tell you stories if you ask about being in Laredo, TX in 1968 while Dad was in pilot’s training and me, being three, having a rocking horse and hopping on it when music was played and rocking in tune.

Add to it my guitar playing that began in second grade.  My desire to have a band.  Yes, there is a photo somewhere that I can no longer find of my friend DeWayne Henshaw over at the house in Northern Michigan and him playing the kid drum set we had.

Fast forward to middle school in California and Derek Kubacki and I wanting to do the same.  The summer of eighth grade I had a paper route and Marc Bringman sold me his classic National electric guitar with a Gretsch amp for $80 bucks.

Move forward to Alabama and the Governor’s office when Terry Abbott and I used to get together and play Mellencamp and Springsteen.  And then there were the days in 2000-01 when I was the site director for Jubilee CityFest, the outdoor weekend festival for Montgomery, Al.

Today I find all these songs that I embrace, and nearly all of them are a couple years old.  I missed them upon release.  Put KT Tunstall, the Dollyrots, Jennifer Knapp, Keane, Feist, Tegan and Sara, etc. on that list.

These quiet days I’ve found a new musical love.  Well, sort of.  I’m thinking I became familiar with her the same way I found KT, I bought that Christmas album The Hotel Cafe presents Winter Songs a few years ago and she was there.
My Childhood 39

But the song rolling through my mind the past few days from Brandi Carlile (2006) is called Closer to You.

If you see some of the comments on YouTube, it says in this video she looks like Paul McCartney and without question she looks a little butchy.

But the voice, the lyrics, the guitar, the drop in notes and then a fast ascendancy in tones make this song stick in my head.  And a review of the lyrics themselves make me scratch my head. Is she seeking a man, woman or God?

I’m going to stick in for the last one and interpret it that way for my own personal benefit.

I’ll add the lyrics first for you so you can follow along.

What would be better with all these sites that list the lyrics would also be an accounting from the artist saying, “Here’s really what I was trying to say with this song.”

CLOSER TO YOU

It’s hard to let the miles pass me by
Yellow lines that blend together in my eyes
And when the seasons change again then I will too
I just want to be closer to you

I’m staring out at endless rows of green
There are miles of hay like I have never seen
Just when you think you’ve had enough and
your dreams come true
I just want to be closer to you

My mind wanders through all that I’ve been hiding from
I tried not to let you down
Now I wonder if I’ve been doin’ something wrong
Help me get my feet back on the ground

Tomorrow I’ll be lying under you
With a heart of gold and arms to fall into
I know that there might come a day
where my life is through
But I just want to be closer to you

My mind wanders through all that I’ve been hiding from
I tried not to let you down
Now I wonder if I’ve been doin’ something wrong
Help me get my feet back on the ground

Someday we might learn to tell the truth
We might even find the fountains of our youth
We all needed something real we all need proof
I just want to be closer to you
I only want to be closer to you
